spices, precious emeralds and chinese silk
had to pay in cash silver or gold
werent used to such a diverse trading environment
wanted to access minerals like african gold fields
realized they had superior naval vessels and bullied everone into submission for awhile
forcibly took ports all across africa and asia establishing, trading post empire
spanish established power in the philippines
stayed a spanish territory until the end of 19th century
spanish ways of life took hold just as in mexico
huge missionary efforts made philippines one of the only christian outposts in asia
many were attracted to spanish economy and fled to manila making it very diverse
the dutch brutally overtook the spice islands and impoverished the land.they monopolized the mace, nutmeg, and cloves market in europe and sold for 14x profit
british were less organized and therefore had to cooperate with mughal authorities and rather focused on cotton textiles than spices
they both became heavily involved in asian trade
despite european efforts asia still participated in market
silver went around the world and made the world go round
silver all ended up in china which had taxes paid in silver
silver supported spanish empire but they used it foolishly and crumbled
japan did better
china outsold local silks

The modern era is a humanistic era Humanistic statues, realistic and studied In paintings subjects are people, ordinary people developed perspective philosophy ,questioning, human agency, democracy all developed in mass in the modern era Was the renaissance a good development? yes because technological and social progress, we live in america, we are a product of the renaissance no because the changes were forced, created a hierarchy, mass genocide and devastated ecosystems no pro outweighs/justifies the cons of colonizing the americas

Strayer Intro to Part Six, Chapter 20

1914-2015 We are now entering a century in which I am most familiar. The people and events are not obscure or hard to relate to because this is the century in which we live and have familiarized ourselves with. Our grandparents remember almost the entirety of this century. We know the presidents, the terrorists, the movements, the social setting of this chapter because it is so recent that we have taken for granted all we know about these years. Some of the events that have unfolded in the 1900s are still current events. This is real, it is where we are as a species and the things that happen are tangible and fresh and still have scars on those who have survived through it all.
